PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
Causes Weight Gain and Increased Belly Fat
PCOS (also known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a women's health issue that causes weight gain and increases belly fat.
I know that many women want to get a flat stomach, and most of the women I meet want to know the best exercise to flatten their stomachs. But, sometimes exercise is not the answer.
If a hormonal imbalance is the cause of weight gain around your waist, then the solution is to control the hormonal imbalance.
PCOS a Hormonal Imbalance
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome arises when there are low levels of the female hormone estrogen and high levels of the male sex hormones (also called androgens).
The ovaries are the female sex organs that produce estrogen. A healthy amount of estrogen is needed to fully develop follicles and release an egg into the fallopian tubes. When estrogen is low, follicles do not fully develop and form cysts (fluid filled sacks) inside the ovaries.
Because the follicles do not properly develop and eggs are not released, fertility is compromised.
There is some debate in the medical community about the exact cause of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. But some researchers have found a connection between insulin resistance and the development of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
The Hormone Insulin and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Researchers at Stanford University and the National Institute of Health have linked insulin resistance to both weight gain and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
The hormone insulin regulates blood sugar levels. When you eat refined carbohydrates, your blood sugar rapidly increases. Over time the over consumption of sugar can lead to insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is a condition in which your cells have a hard time recognizing and processing insulin.
In regards to polycystic ovarian syndrome, elevated insulin levels tend to make the ovaries produce more testosterone relative to estrogen. It is supposed that the elevated testosterone levels significantly effect fertility.

Improve PCOS and
Lose Belly Fat through Healthy Eating
If you've read my page on low carb diet plans then you know that I feel you can lose weight when you decrease your consumption of highly refined sugar.
Actually, you can improve many different health problems by restricting your intake of highly refined sugar. Insulin resistance is associated with problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, obesity and weight gain, glaucoma, diabetes, heart disease, and PCOS.
Isn't that awesome!
You can significantly improve your health by doing 1 simple thing...
Avoid highly refined processed sugar (especially high fructose corn syrup) like the plague.
If you have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and want to lose belly fat, then it makes sense to decrease your consumption of sugar in an attempt to balance the hormone insulin.
