2 Rotational Abs Exercise Variations
Knees to the Side and Legs to the Side
This page has 2 rotational abs exercise variations.
Oblique exercises must involve twisting, rotation, or side bending to be the most effective at strengthening the obliques.
Some oblique exercises focus on rotating the upper body and others focus on rotation from the lower body. Because the legs are much heavier than the arms, your abs will have to work really hard to stabilize your spine and move your body.
Below are two oblique exercises that focus on rotation of the lower body.
Rotational Abs Exercise Variation #1:
Double Knees to the Side
Starting Position: Begin by lying on your back with your knees bent and your hips at 90 degrees. Place your arms out to the side to stabilize your upper body.
Form: Exhale and slowly lower both of your knees towards the floor. Move only as far as you feel comfortable.
Hold briefly at the bottom and then rotate to the other side.
Personal Trainer Tips: Move in a controlled manner. Perform 8-15 repetitions on each side.
If you are stiff, you range of motion may be limited. Move only as far as you can control without lifting your upper body off the floor. Use your arms for support.
Rotational Abs Exercise Variation #2:
Double Straight Legs to the Side
This ab exercise is similar to the above exercise. The difference is that you keep your legs straight.
Starting Position: Begin by lying on your back with your knees straight and your hips at 90 degrees. Place your arms out to the side for support.
Form: Exhale and slowly lower both of your feet towards the floor. Move only as far as you can control. Hold briefly at the bottom and then rotate your legs to the other side.
Personal Trainer Tips: This is a very difficult and advanced exercise. It requires a lot of abdominal strength and puts pressure on the lower back.
You should definitely master the above exercise before attempting this one.
